The 2010 JCC Stephen Gottlieb Music Festival, which runs March 6 – 14, features an eclectic mix of performers ranging from Tony and Emmy award winner Hal Linden to the Jazz artistry of the Michigan-bred Jesse Palter Quartet.

Hal Linden headlines the opening night of the festival on March 6. Perhaps best known as the star of the TV series Barney Miller, Mr. Linden is an actor, singer and musician who has earned 3 Emmy awards and a Tony for his lead role in “The Rothchilds,” on Broadway. He continues to perform symphonic concerts around the country and has appeared in recent Broadway productions, as well in guest roles on many TV shows. A patron event honoring Patti & Steven Tapper, Susan & Howard Tapper and Marla Tapper & Brian Young, will follow Mr. Linden’s performance.

In addition to Detroit Music Award-winning vocalist, composer and bandleader, Jesse Palter, who will perform with her all-star jazz quartet, the 2010 community-wide Music Festival will include a celebration of Jewish masterpieces for cello and piano by the chamber duo of Inbal Segev and Elena Bakst; a family concert by popular Jewish contemporary musician Rabbi Joe Black; performances by the Chicago A capella group Shircago and members of the Michigan Opera Theatre (MOT) accompanied by MOT General Director Dr. David DiChiera; a concert by the Michigan Board of Cantors, and an afternoon of Yiddish, Israeli and Broadway tunes with local artist Elaine Serling. Additional highlights include a lecture by Leonard Slatkin, music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, workshops on Israeli dance and Jewish healing through music, the premiere of two movies from the Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival, and a Teen Battle of the Bands. Two bonus programs will bookend the festival: Drums and Beyond featuring Music Batteria will take the stage on February 21, and Matisyahu will perform his unique blend of Hasidic, reggae and hip hop via a live satellite broadcast from New York’s 92 Street Y on March 16.

The Stephen Gottlieb Music Festival was named in memory of Stephen who had a deep passion for listening to, teaching and writing music. The festival is open to the community and all proceeds benefit the Arts, Culture & Education Department at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Metropolitan Detroit. All programs will be held at the at the JCC’s D. Dan & Betty Kahn building, 6600 W. Maple Road in West Bloomfield and the Jimmy Prentis Morris building, 15110 W. Ten Mile Road in Oak Park.
