JCC Day Camps Revs Up for Summer 2019
The JCC of Metro Detroit’s summer day camp is gearing up for a second tremendous summer since the beginning of its partnership with Tamarack Camps. Based on extensive feedback from families last year, staff have revamped and improved many of the camp’s 50+ different programs for a more exciting, engaging, and convenient-for-parents summer experience.
The traditional Day Camp program has been renamed Camp Kehilla (pronounced “keh-HE-lla”, the Hebrew word for community), to reflect the home-away-from-home sense of belonging we aim to instill in our young people. We also welcome Rachel Petrylka, our new 2019 Chaverim (pronounced “ha-VAY-reem”, or friends in Hebrew) Unit Head who comes to us with extensive experience working with children, including currently in our own Sarah & Irving Pitt Child Development Center.
We’ll continue to provide helpful supports for hard-working families including Extended Care (7-9 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m.) and free bus service from many locations across metro Detroit. We’ll also be adding a new carpool lane for drop-off and pick-up to ease your way in and out of the J!
Our 37 Specialty Camps aim to offer a deep-dive into specific skill-building areas, everything from Archery to Zoo Camp, Mad Batter baking camp to Shark Tank entrepreneur camp. These programs bring out the creativity in our young people, instilling confidence and curiosity with a heaping dose of good old- fashioned fun. See our brochure for the full list of options, some of which fill up quickly with limited space!
And, of course, we continue to offer our world-class Special Needs inclusion programs, like Kids All Together (KAT) which provides a 1:1 Inclusion Counselor and a camper-specific plan to help young people develop social connections and increase independence. Our Special Needs Adventure Program (SNAP) provides on-site camp fun and off-campus field trips for campers not requiring 1:1 support. Finally, our Young Adults All Together (YAAT) track brings campers real-life vocational and life skills at job sites like Forgotten Harvest and Greening of Detroit.
To make registration even easier for families, we’ve launched a brand-new website chock-full of resources for parents, staff and campers: visit us at camp.jccdet.org.
