Rabbi Elyse Goldstein: "The Power of Prayer"
Monday, March 20 | 11:45 a.m.
Have you ever wondered what prayer is all about? Is there a point to saying those words time and again? Is there a right way to pray, and do we expect too much – or too little – from synagogue services?
Please join us as Rabbi Elyse Goldstein unravels the mysteries of Jewish prayer – including a fascinating look at what other religions can teach us about its importance.
$21 ($18 for JCC members)
Rabbi Elyse Goldstein was graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Brandeis University in 1978 and received her Masters in Hebrew Literature and Ordination in 1983, and her Doctor of Divinity, honoris causis, in 2008. She served for twenty years as the Director of Kolel in Toronto, an adult education institute which she founded in 1991 which was considered a leading institution in the field of Jewish adult education. She is currently the Founding Rabbi of City Shul, a synagogue she founded 3 years ago together with a dedicate team of lay leaders. In those 3 years the synagogue has grown to 230 families.
She is one of seven women featured in the Canadian National Film Board documentary, “Half the Kingdom.” She is the author of ReVisions: Seeing Torah through a Feminist Lens and editor of The Women’s Torah Commentary, The Women’s Haftarah Commentary and New Jewish Feminism: Probing the Past, Forging the Future.
Presented in conjunction with Limmud Michigan 2017.
SAJE is endowed by a generous gift from Cis Maisel Kellman and is supported by Carol & Ronald Fogel and Sophie Pearlstein through the JCC's Pillars of Light program.
