Creative Camps

 

Creative camps are one week long each and allow children to choose whatever activity they love best. Each camp includes dedicated time for the specialty, plus swimming. Creative camps are available throughout the summer for children in grades 1-10 (grade going into in fall 2016). Please see descriptions below for complete information.

Animal Extravaganza

Campers will learn about wolf habitats, how the Michigan State Police Canine unit helps with tracking as well as how the Leader Dogs for the Blind assist people. Kids will also see live mammals and reptiles and learn about bats and owls at the Bat Zone. Campers will see how sheep’s wool is made into sweaters and enjoy a hayride at the MSU Tollgate Farm.

Baking Championship* - SOLD OUT

Calling all young pastry chefs: Life is too short to not eat dessert first! If you love to bake, invent new cupcake flavors, or decorate cakes, this lip-smacking camp is for you. Youngsters will have a delicious time in this camp where they’ll make a variety of cookies, cakes, and brownies, all while whipping up batches of fun. Campers will be divided into groups for the week and given recipe challenges. All recipes will be compiled into a keepsake cookbook for your pastry chef to share at home. Talk about yummy fun!

Candy Crushing Art

Do you have a sweet tooth? Get ready for a sweet treat of a week with candy themed crafts including a cupcake glass fusion project, painting pottery milkshake mugs, pop art ice cream cones, candy sushi, making your own rock candy and more. SWEET!

Carved Clay: Tiles & Plates

Ceramic students will get three-dimensionally creative while having fun using clay to make all kinds of unique ceramic pieces! They will use basic hand building skills to make tiles and plates perfect for carving. Students in the Level 2 program will learn additional skills including sgraffito, an Italian carving technique.

Circus

Cirque-Amongus makes every child’s big-top dreams come true! Designed to build self-esteem and promote teamwork, Circus camp helps children learn how to tumble, juggle, apply clown make-up and astound audiences. On the final day, the JCC will be transformed into a circus where children perform for friends and family.

Clay: Food Fun, Pop Art

Ceramic students will get to experience clay through pop art! They will learn foundational hand building techniques to make mini ceramic sculptures inspired by food and pop artists, including glazing a pre-made ceramic cookie jar.

Cookie-licious*

There is nothing as comforting as the aroma and taste of freshly baked cookies. This summer, our young pastry chefs will learn valuable baking skills and methods as they explore the world of cookies, making everything from the delicious standard chocolate chip to the their own tasty concoctions. Frosting fun will be had as we learn various icing techniques! YUM!

Cupcake Wars* - SOLD OUT 

Cupcakes are all the rage and it’s a trend that’s clearly here to stay! If you’ve ever been curious about how the pros make those cupcakes so precious and ornate, and if competition is your middle name, then this is the week for you! We’ll spend a few days on baking basics, measuring, mixing, baking, and frosting. Then finish the week with two days of baking battles! Teams will face off with one another to compete for the title of “Best Cupcake,” among others. May the best cupcake win!

Everything Jewelry

Campers will create jazzy jewelry and other beading projects using a variety of beads and beading techniques. They will even be taught how to incorporate wire wrapping into their wearable works of art! Unique pieces can be worn themselves or make beautiful gifts.

Fairy Gardens & Hobbit Holes

Mythical creatures run free in this imagination driven camp! Campers will sculpt miniature hobbit and fairy doors, figures, furniture, and accessories and build exotic garden homes using found items and so much more! Each camper will bring home a wonderful terrarium of their unique mystical world.

Fruit Frenzy

Watermelons, bananas, berries, and more…Come and get your fruit! This creative cooking camp will teach you how to peel, cut, chop, and play with fruit, making scrumptiously healthy treats. From smoothies and pies to fruit crafts and games, Fruit Frenzy is sure to be a delicious delight!

Glass: Plates, Pots & Pendants - SOLD OUT

Back by popular demand (but with different projects of course), our dazzling glass camp is clearly a winner. Come experience the art and beauty of fused glass! Each day will be packed with creating an exciting one-of-a-kind glass project, from colorful plates and bowls to stylish pendants. Young artists will learn how to safely handle glass in addition to learning how to score, cut, and nip glass, using it to create exquisite gallery quality glasswork.

Glass: Tiles and Chimes (Advanced)

Have you taken glass fusing before and are hooked on its beauty and endless creative possibilities? If so, than this creative camp is for you! This advanced level course will provide you with detailed projects creating functional glass objects of exquisite splendor including wind chimes, name tiles, and more detailed projects.

Henna Hands: Body Art & Crafts

Kids will learn the basics of the ancient Sephardic Jewish tradition of henna tattoos. They will get to experiment with this natural stain, glitter tattoos and other body art techniques, plus get a henna tattoo from a henna artist. Intricate and ornate designs will not only be applied to the skin but will carry over onto various crafts. This week will leave you fully decorated from head to toe.

All products used in this camp are safe and made specifically for the body. Henna art may stain the skin for up to 3 weeks.

How to be a Princess

In our new magical Princess Camp, all your dreams will come true as we promote poise and self-confidence, learn proper manners and etiquette. Princesses will create beautiful princess crafts, dress up as princesses, have a tea party, a special photo shoot and so much more.

Jedi in Training - SOLD OUT

Young Padawans: Let the Jedi adventure begin at the JCC with all things Star Wars! Campers will learn to use the force through various games and activities, make Jedi cloaks, bake intergalactic foods, and even create their own light saber to defeat the Evil Empire. A trip to the planetarium may even be in their future! Come train with us, escape the Dark Side, and help Obi Wan Kenobi find his home. May the force be with you.

LEGO® Land Camp

Foster your imagination and creativity in this constructive week of fun perfect camp for every LEGO® enthusiast! Children build, create and design amazing inventions. Projects will begin with a “getting their feet wet” with a project kit (that they will be able to keep!) and move into more complex “Create a Town!” creations that will be displayed at the Center! Campers learn about different styles of architecture and 3D design as they build as far as their imagination can take them. This camp is excellent both for honing sequencing and logic skills as it is for the simple pleasure of bringing life to your creations.

Master Chef Junior* - SOLD OUT

Master Chefs – Get Ready, Get Set, GO! In this cooking competition campers will team up to battle their peers for cooking fun. Students will spend the week creating recipes and learning the basics of cooking. They will practice making yummy dishes and have their classmates taste them. On Friday the teams will cook it live for a panel of judges. Master Chefs make cooking a cause for celebration.

Minecraft Camp

Campers will use the popular video game Minecraft to learn about electronic circuits, electricity and wiring in a fun, game filled environment. Redstone is a fictional element in Minecraft that can power all the things that your camper creates – from doors, lamps, rail tracks to houses and much more. Campers will learn the basics of powering their world using Redstone and learn to build amazing creations like password protected doors, a collapsing bridge, secret mazes and many other challenges that will get them thinking, learning and building!

Mini Scientists

Can candy really blow up a pop bottle? How do you make invisible ink? Can we really make super balls from liquid? How does the sun power a car? Find out the answer to these and other scientific questions science in a week of amazing experimentation ending with a show for parents.

Painting Party

Calling all artists! Spend your week dabbling in all types of painting mediums and techniques including watercolor, acrylic, straw blowing, shaving cream painting and more. This class encourages you to let your creativity fly free while learning different painting techniques and color applications. We will paint on everything from paper and canvas to rocks and glass. Artists – don’t miss this new exciting week of fun free expression!

Ready, Set, Go, DETROIT

There is so much more to explore on this exciting Detroit tour. Each day, campers venture off to an exciting destination such as the Detroit’s very own Outdoor Adventure Center, the DIA for some creative fun, the Detroit Historical Museum to make some music in the Kid Rock Music Lab, and a day on the beach at Belle Isle.

Restaurant Camp

Whether you dream of owning a restaurant that serves burgers and fries or a gourmet bistro in Paris, this camp is certain to be a tasty treat. Campers will plan their own menus and cook up delicious meals that our guests can enjoy at the restaurant’s grand opening on Friday. A field trip to the JCC’s very own catering kitchen will give campers a look at the inner workings of the real restaurant life.

So You Think You Can Sing & Dance

This camp offers a fun week of learning the ins and outs of professional on stage performance and crafting the expertise of voice and dance. The week concludes with a final performance on Friday, July 22.

Spy Kids

You are a spy and you have a mission! Your mission, shall you choose to accept it will require you to conduct surveillance, make and break secret codes, uncover important secrets, create spy gear, and other cool mystery adventures! It’s a role-play adventure you’ll never forget! This message will self-destruct this summer!

Superhero

Join us for a week immersed in superhero excitement. Campers will play games and create super cool gadgets and costumes perfect for a Superhero. They will even invent their own unique superhero character, and much more. Grab you mask and cape and get ready for a super adventure.

Video Game Building

Kids love playing video games. Now they can build their own! What better way to teach a child core STEM concepts than using a medium that has their full attention? Kids will immerse themselves in all aspects of video game design – from game ideation to storyboarding to the iterative development process of prototyping and testing. Kids also get to take home their video games!

Young Movie Directors

In this camp, campers will come up with concepts for short movies, learn how to write a script and storyboard. Campers will then bring this to life by creating their very own shorts, exploring both sides of the lens from using camera equipment to creating costumes and props.

The campers will then star in their very own movie which they will bring home on DVD at the end of the week.

Young Wizards

Future Houdini’s will learn incredible card tricks and astonishing sleights of hand! Children receive a box full of magic and spend the week learning how to perform cool tricks, plus how to shape balloon animals and create magic with everyday objects. Kids will perform in a talent show at the end of week.
